Discovering Meditation
Understanding the value of a regular meditation practice came instantly for me when I was introduced to meditation in my 40s. Some previously repressed emotions in relation to childhood trauma had begun to erupt, and I was feeling overwhelmed. A friend suggested I attend a meditation class with her. That very first class highlighted my shallow breathing; I was breathing with short, shallow breaths, only into the top part of my lungs. Leaving that first class it felt as if I’d struck gold, I was hooked and attended weekly – back then there wasn’t the convenience of on-demand online access.
Learning to take slow and deep breaths changed my experience with the outside world. Cultivating slower and more controlled breath reduced the activity in my parasympathetic nervous system, that’s the part responsible for the ‘flight or fight’ response, and it helped to decrease my stress levels about the emotions I was experiencing.
It became the key that opened the door to so much more healing, acceptance, love and peace in my life. And it’s my greatest wish that this program will start you on a path of reconnection with your heart too.
